Going against The Grain: Why I Don't Like Batiste Dry Shampoo

I don't want to be carving a name out for myself as 'the one who only writes bad reviews', but here we are again! I've had this product sitting on my dresser for such a long time, and didn't even realise it was such a big hit amongst bloggers!

Batiste, batiste dry shampoo, dry shampoo, tropical
★ Batiste Dry Shampoo in scent 'Tropical'

I don't have any issues with the product performance; it claims to banish oily roots, add body and texture, and leave hair feeling fresh and clean - and that's exactly what it does. That bit I am happy with. My problem lies in the fact that the product itself is a off-white/grey colour, which wreaks havoc on my brunette hair!

Warning: the following pictures show me on my hair wash day! Expect a little grease - this is a dry shampoo post after all!

★ My hair before the dry shampoo (I din't notice the fluff in my hair 'til after taking the pictures!)

As instructed by the bottle, I then sprayed it approximately 30cm (I did around 3/4 of an arms length) away from my head and in the direction of my roots. I lifted up a few layers to make sure all angles were covered. Also, excuse the roots - I'm trying to refrain from dying again!

★ My hair straight after applying the dry shampoo - I'm going grey!

As you can see, the colour of the product does not match brunette hair at all, giving me a lovely aged look whilst I'm still in my ripe old 20's! Of course, this isn't the finished look - it's not that bad don't worry!

★ My hair after rubbing in the dry shampoo for around 2 minutes

The product has had a lovely effect on my hair, the biggest comparison can be seen in the bottom-left picture, that shine definitely wasn't there before! My only issue is this grey-ish tinge that has covered my roots and just will not budge! The camera hasn't picked up the extent of it, but when comparing it to the first picture you can see that my hair has suddenly become a lot lighter.

I love the actual effect that this dry shampoo has, I just wish that instead of releasing all these various different scents that Batiste seems to be coming out with, they would bring out dry shampoo tailored to a wider variety of hair colours. I know that they do a brunette dry shampoo, but by the looks of their reviews, that product even gives this greying effect so I'm reluctant to buy another Batiste product! I was recommended this product by my blonde friend, and have seen many rave reviews on it from blonde bloggers, it just doesn't agree with me!

Do any of you fellow brunettes have the same issue? Or am I applying it wrong? Please let me know, I really want this product to work for me!

  4. I have dark brown hair and I love the batiste products! They key for me, is only spraying on the underside of the hair...i neve apply directly to the visible root area...but i will lift a 1 inch section and spray the underside.

I also like to tip my head uypside down and blast my roots with a hot hairdrier for about a minute or two. This seems to get rid of any grey residue and gives the most unbelievable body!

    1. I've never thought to blow dry it out, but that's a really good tip! I'll give that a go next time and see the results again, I also need all the volume I can get - my hair is always so thin and flat!

  7. I went through a phase of using dry shampoo loads but I stopped because I don't like the way it makes my hair feels although I've seen a lot if people saying it does wonders if used to volumise hair. Perhaps trying some different brands and ones for darker hair may help with the greyness :)

  8. Not a 'bad' review at all! in fact you pointed out how good it actually is. I do like the end result, and yes, it may work better on lighter hair colour, but overall the texture and shine look good. And really, dry shampoos are only for emergencies! and on a slumming-it-safari!

    1. I've heard of using baby powder but just fear that I'l get the exact same results as this 'cause the power is white - does it completely absorb into your hair?

  12. I use the Batiste brunette dry shampoo and love it. It is the only dry shampoo I have found that doesn't make my hair go grey. I suggest giving it a go.

  13. If the formula is good, I think it might be worth trying out the brunette version of this product. I really want to try a dry shampoo, but my hair tends to be too dark for the blonde formulas, and too light/gold for the brunette ones! :(

Also, I just wanted to let you know I've nominated you for the One Lovely blog award:

  15. I've personally never noticed a gray tinge to my hair, but I apply such a tiny amount of any dry shampoo-the bare minimum so I can try to cut down on any color effects because applying a white powder to my black/brown hair is never a good idea :D xoxo

    1. I don't mind it so much, because I only use a little, but the good thing about Batiste is that you can get a brown version to minimise the white effect. I haven't tried that version yet because the normal one is fine

  18. Superdrug have a good offer on Batiste hair shampoo at the minute, I think the sign says it's better than half price, so you could buy the brunette one to try it out and see!x
